LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Drivers should prepare for slowdowns and backups on the San Diego (405) Freeway starting Friday through the weekend as Caltrans will close several ramps on and off the freeway and reduce traffic to three lanes in both directions in areas around the Sepulveda Pass.
“This work is part of the I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project between the Los Angeles communities of Van Nuys and Westwood along the Sepulveda Pass,” Caltrans said in a statement. “This project will apply about $143.7 million toward improving the safety and mobility along I-405 between Van Nuys and Westwood as well as extend the pavement life.”
The multi-million pavement rehabilitation project runs between Santa Monica Boulevard to just north of Sunset Boulevard, according to Caltrans.
The extended weekend lane reductions are set to begin Friday night at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday.
The freeway will be reduced to three lanes in each direction and motorists are urged to use alternate routes or public transportation.
On the northbound side, the 405 will be reduced to three lanes between Santa Monica Boulevard to just north of Sunset Boulevard. The Santa Monica Boulevard on-ramp and the Wilshire Boulevard off-ramp will be closed.
Additionally, the eastbound and westbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramps to northbound 405 will be closed, as well as the on-and-off ramps for Sunset Boulevard. The off-ramp on Sepulveda Boulevard and Moraga Drive will also be closed.
On the southbound side, the 405 will be reduced to three lanes just north of Sunset Boulevard to eastbound Wilshire Boulevard. The Sunset Boulevard/Church Lane on/off-ramps will be closed, as well as the westbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramp to southbound 405.
According to the transportation agency, motorists can take the following alternate routes:
— Santa Monica Boulevard to northbound 405: Travel east on Santa Monica Boulevard and north on Sepulveda Boulevard to the on-ramp to northbound 405 at Moraga Drive; and
— Sunset Boulevard to southbound 405: Travel north on Church Lane, south on Sepulveda Boulevard, west on Santa Monica Boulevard to the on-ramp to southbound 405.
Extended weekend lane reductions are expected to occur about every two weeks along various sections of the 405. There will be about 25 extended lane reductions for this project, according to Caltrans.
The schedule is subject to change as a result of weather or operational reasons.
Residents and businesses near construction sites may hear noise or experience vibrations and dust, Caltrans officials said.
