Huntington Beach City Council is set to decide on a proposal allowing alcohol sales at snack shacks in a public sports park near playgrounds. The proposal from Huntington Beach Sports Complex LLC suggests setting up outdoor bars and dining areas close to playgrounds, featuring craft beer and a variety of food options like smashburgers and Detroit-style pizza.
The snack shacks have already generated over $330,000 in revenue this year, with $13,000 going to the city as rent. Currently, only one of the two concession stands is open, but plans are in place to reopen the second location. The proposal includes adding outdoor seating and a bar area, with plans for televisions showing live games and food delivery to fields, although alcoholic beverages would not be delivered.
The Huntington Beach Planning Commission recently approved conditional use permits for alcohol sales, despite concerns about proximity to youth sports venues. Some residents and officials, including Planning Commissioner Tracy Pellman, have expressed worries about children accessing the bar area. Pellman, who has appealed the decision to the state Alcohol Beverage Control board, stated, “I have eight grandchildren, two of them are toddlers, and I guarantee with what you describe they would be climbing on it.”
The proposal includes security measures and restrictions, such as table service in enclosed areas and limiting alcohol service hours from noon to 10 p.m. However, concerns remain about the potential impact on youth sports events, with some residents and coaches opposing the idea. The Planning Commission’s decision is final unless appealed to the City Council within 10 days.
The City Council will meet tonight at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposal further. The outcome could set a precedent for similar facilities in the area.
