L.A. Sheriff Luna: Department Has No Choice, Must Turn Over Inmates To ICE

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced on Thursday that his department must comply with federal judicial warrants to transfer inmates to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During a press conference at the Hall of Justice, Luna addressed community concerns regarding the department’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities. He emphasized that transfers occur only when presented with a federal judicial warrant signed by a judge, in accordance with California law and county policy.

The sheriff’s department transferred 20 inmates to ICE between May and June, as reported by ABC7. Most of these inmates faced serious charges, including attempted murder, robbery, rape, and sexual battery. Luna stated that these judicial warrants are “an effective and peaceful vehicle in transferring individuals who have committed violent or serious crimes.”

Despite California’s sanctuary laws limiting cooperation with ICE on civil matters, federal judicial warrants override local sanctuary policies. According to Newsweek, the transfers mark the first time the sheriff’s department has handed over inmates to ICE since early 2020. Luna assured that his department remains in compliance with both local and state laws.

The transfers have sparked debate over the balance between local sanctuary policies and federal immigration enforcement. However, Luna reiterated that his department has “no choice” but to honor these warrants, as they align with both federal and state legal requirements. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between federal immigration policies and local sanctuary laws in California.
