It’s not summer in Los Angeles without a picnic blanket, a bottle of your favorite beverage, and the poetic sounds of Shakespeare floating through the trees of Griffith Park. The beloved tradition of Shakespeare in the Park is back, thanks to the tireless work of Independent Shakespeare Company, known affectionately as Indie Shakes, and its Artistic Director, Melissa Chalsma.
Chalsma and her team are once again transforming the iconic Old Zoo stage area into a vibrant, open-air theater where Angelenos can experience world-class performances for free.
This season Indie Shakes is performing Love’s Labour’s Lost, a not-often-performed work from Shakespeare. But Chalsma, who also stars in the production, says it’s full of bawdy wit that visitors will enjoy. It runs now through July 27th.
Then Doctor Faustus takes the stage in a dramatic turn starting Aug. 6th through the end of the season. Indie Shakes promises, and delivers, bold interpretations of classic works, innovative staging, and the kind of community atmosphere that makes Griffith Park feel like a cultural heartbeat of the city. Thousands attend each summer, drawn not only by the powerful performances but also by the mission: free, accessible theater for all.
Chalsma recently joined the Entertain Me with Heather Brooker podcast to preview this year’s productions and reflect on the power of making Shakespeare approachable and relevant in 2025. From behind-the-scenes challenges to the joy of watching families discover the Bard for the first time, her passion is clear.
You can get more details on the Indie Shakes website for show dates and tips on what to bring for the perfect theater night under the stars.
