The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating after the El Rancho Unified School District released video footage allegedly showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents urinating on school grounds in Pico Rivera. The incident occurred on June 17 at Ruben Salazar High School, where eight to 10 agents reportedly parked their vehicles and urinated near storage containers. The district’s officials sent a letter on Wednesday to Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, demanding an investigation.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the footage was captured by surveillance cameras and showed the agents in public view, adjacent to a preschool playground and an elementary school. The district’s letter described the behavior as “deeply disturbing” and raised concerns about the agents’ judgment and the safety of the school community.
The East Bay Times reported that the agents were asked to leave the premises as they did not have permission to be there. After they complied, staff members observed them urinating and reported it to the district’s executive management. The district has requested a report on the findings of the investigation and the identities of the agents involved.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn criticized the agents’ actions, calling it a “slap in the face” to the community and children. The incident has heightened tensions amid ongoing immigration enforcement actions in Southern California. DHS has stated that the matter is under investigation.
