Southern California Grocery Workers, Chains Reach Tentative Deal

On Wednesday, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union announced a tentative agreement with major grocery chains, averting a potential strike by over 45,000 workers in Southern California. The deal involves Albertsons, Kroger, and seven UFCW local unions, and comes just days before the July Fourth holiday.

The agreement, which spans three years, promises higher wages, increased pension contributions, and improvements in health, welfare, and staffing, according to the union. However, specific details of the contract remain undisclosed. The tentative deal follows a strike authorization vote held on June 11, where members voted 90 percent in favor of a strike.

The Daily News reported that negotiations resumed last week after a month-long break, with intense bargaining sessions leading to the agreement. Despite the union’s announcement, some members expressed dissatisfaction, citing a lack of transparency and details about the contract.

Union members from San Luis Obispo to San Diego will vote on the contract next week. The vote is set to begin on Wednesday and conclude on July 11.

Ground News noted that the agreement comes amidst a broader wave of labor negotiations across the country, with contracts for around 100,000 UFCW members expiring this summer.
