The city of Los Angeles must submit documents and communication records related to recent anti-deportation protests to the U.S. House of Representatives by today. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, is investigating California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass regarding their handling of the demonstrations that erupted on June 6 following federal immigration enforcement operations.
The committee has requested that Newsom and Bass provide all documents and communications between their offices and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The investigation also seeks records related to the sources of weapons allegedly used by rioters. According to the House Oversight Committee, these documents are crucial for understanding the extent of violence during the protests and the response from law enforcement.
House Republicans argue that the protests were violent and that state and local authorities failed to control the situation before the National Guard’s deployment. They claim that California’s sanctuary policies hinder cooperation with federal immigration authorities, exacerbating tensions.
In response, Newsom and Bass have criticized President Donald Trump for his immigration policies, which they argue have provoked unrest. The investigation comes amid broader scrutiny of the protests, including a separate inquiry by Senator Josh Hawley into whether a local nonprofit funded the demonstrations.
