Lone Survivor Reveals How He Escaped Airliner Crash In Residential Area

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the lone known survivor of the Air India plane crash in a residential neighborhood suspected to have killed more than 240 others, including his own brother, shared details on how he managed to exit the fiery aircraft through an emergency exit door.

“The side of the plane I was in landed on the ground, and I could see that there was space outside the aircraft, so when my door broke I tried to escape through it and I did,” Ramseh told Indian state broadcaster DD News from a hospital bed on Friday (June 13) via the New York Post.

“I don’t believe how I survived. For some time I thought I was also going to die,” “I don’t believe how I survived. For some time I thought I was also going to die,” he added. “But when I opened my eyes, I realised I was alive and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others (died).”

Ramesh, 40, of Britain, was in seat 11A of the Boeing 787-8 when it crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in northwest India. Ramesh was seen limping away from the wreckage and reacted to the crash while speaking to the Hindustan Times from a hospital bed.

“When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me,” Ramesh previously said on Thursday (June 12) from his hospital bed via the New York Post.

“Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”

Air India Flight 171 crashed about five minutes after taking off for London Gatwick in Ahmedabad, Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, India’s director general of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, confirmed via the New York Post. The pilot made a “Mayday” call seconds after takeoff and videos shared online showed the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner moving downward before bursting into flames, at which point thick black smoke filled the skyline.
