TikTok superstar Khaby Lame was detained by federal immigration officers at a Las Vegas airport.
On Friday (June 6), Lame, who boasts over 160 million followers on TikTok, was detained at Harry Reid Airport in Las Vegas for “immigration violations” after he allegedly “overstayed the terms of his visa,” an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson said, per Newsweek.
ICE said Lame, an Italian citizen, arrived in the U.S. on April 30 and voluntarily left on Friday following his detainment.
“Lame was granted voluntary departure June 6 and has since departed the U.S.,” the spokesperson said.
The TikTok star was reportedly born in Senegal and moved at a young age to Italy, where he officially became a citizen in 2022. Lame began making TikTok videos in his free time after he was laid off from his factory job in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. He amassed a large following by making videos with a minimalist comedic style, often poking fun at other overly complicated or absurd TikToks.
Conservative commentator Bo Loudon was among the first to report Lame’s detention on Friday. Loudon shared an alleged screenshot from the ICE website showing that Lame was being held at the Henderson Detention Center in Nevada.
Lame appeared to stay active on social media after his reported departure from the U.S. On Saturday (June 7), an image from Venice Beach was shared on Lame’s Instagram Stories, and a new video appeared on his TikTok.
