Destructive Storms Leave At Least Two Dead Across The South

Severe storms swept through the southern United States over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving tens of thousands without power. The storms brought heavy rainfall, hail, and gusty winds, affecting states from Texas to South Carolina.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves reported that one person was killed in Lafayette County when a tree fell on a vehicle. In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp confirmed another fatality in Banks County under similar circumstances. Kemp expressed his condolences on social media, urging people to “join us in praying for the loved ones of a Georgian tragically lost tonight due to the severe storms.”

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Van Buren, Arkansas, which damaged multiple homes and injured one person. Additional severe weather is expected to continue through the southern Plains and the South, with the highest risk in southwest Oklahoma and northern Texas. The storms are predicted to bring destructive wind gusts up to 100 miles per hour, hail up to five inches in diameter, and a few tornadoes.
