The National Guard will be deployed to Los Angeles County following escalating anti-ICE protests, as announced by Trump administration border czar Tom Homan on Saturday. The protests intensified near a Home Depot in Paramount, California, where ICE agents allegedly conducted a raid, leading to the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
According to Fox News, the protests erupted into violence, resulting in several arrests for assaulting federal agents. Homan emphasized the need to enforce the law, stating, “American people, this is about enforcing the law, and again, we’re not going to apologize for doing it.”
The situation escalated as federal agents clashed with protesters, using flash-bang grenades and tear gas. Yahoo News reported that the protests were part of ongoing immigration raids under President Donald Trump’s administration, which aims to crack down on undocumented immigrants. The protests included demonstrators waving Mexican flags and setting a U.S. flag on fire, with some creating roadblocks using cement blocks and overturned shopping carts.
Authorities, including FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, vowed to prosecute offenders, stating, “You bring chaos, and we’ll bring handcuffs. Law and order will prevail.” The deployment of the National Guard is intended to bolster security and address the violence and destruction occurring near raid locations.
The protests in Los Angeles, a diverse city with a significant Hispanic or Latino population, reflect the tensions surrounding immigration policies. The suburb of Paramount, where the protests took place, is predominantly Hispanic or Latino, according to U.S. Census data.
