The FBI has identified the suspect in the bombing of a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, as 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus. Bartkus, who lived in Twentynine Palms, was killed in the explosion on Saturday while attempting to live-stream the attack, according to officials.
Investigators described Bartkus as having “nihilistic ideations,” suggesting he disapproved of bringing people into the world against their will. He detonated explosives outside the American Reproductive Centers clinic, injuring four people who have since been released from the hospital. None of the injured were staff or patients at the clinic.
The FBI is reviewing a manifesto believed to be linked to Bartkus and is seeking public assistance to trace his movements before the blast. The explosion, which was felt more than a mile away, is considered one of the largest bombing scenes in Southern California in recent memory. Several buildings were damaged, but the clinic’s lab, including all eggs and embryos, remained secure and undamaged.
Bartkus’s father reported not having spoken to his son for over a decade, noting a change in his behavior after moving to Twentynine Palms. The FBI continues to investigate the incident, with officials remaining on the scene to gather evidence.
