Trump Calls $5,000 Baby Bonus To Boost Birth Rate ‘A Good Idea’

President Donald Trump has expressed support for a proposal to offer a $5,000 “baby bonus” to new mothers as part of efforts to reverse declining birth rates in the United States. When asked about the idea in the Oval Office on Tuesday (April 22), President Trump said, “Sounds like a good idea to me.

The proposal is part of a broader discussion within the White House to encourage more Americans to have children.

The United States has seen a significant decline in birth rates, with just under 3.6 million babies born in 2023, the lowest since 1979. This decline has prompted the administration to explore various incentives, including the baby bonus, reserving 30% of Fulbright scholarships for married applicants or those with children, and government-funded educational programs about menstrual cycles to help women understand their fertility.

The New York Times reported that the White House is also considering a “National Medal of Motherhood” for women with six or more children. Despite these discussions, the White House has not yet committed to any specific plan.

The administration’s focus on pronatalism, supported by Vice President J.D. Vance and entrepreneur Elon Musk, aims to create a “baby boom” in the country. However, concerns remain about the inclusivity of these initiatives, especially for non-traditional families. As the White House continues to deliberate on these proposals, the debate over the best approach to address the declining birth rate continues.
