On Wednesday, transportation officials celebrated the completion of a major expansion project on the 5 Freeway in South County, California. The $687 million project, which took several years to complete, added new lanes and rebuilt several interchanges along the congested stretch of highway. The 5 Freeway is a vital transportation route, with approximately 390,000 vehicles traveling it daily.
At a ceremony marking the project’s completion, Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) board member and Dana Point Councilmember Jamey Federico emphasized the freeway’s importance. “I know firsthand how important this freeway behind me is to the everyday lives of our residents here in South County,” he said. “Whether it’s students going to school, workers commuting to their jobs, or visitors coming down to see our beaches, the I-5 is really the backbone of transit in South Orange County.”
Federico, who has served on the OCTA Board of Directors since January 2023, is a former Marine Corps officer with a background in geomechanics and strategic planning. His leadership has been instrumental in overseeing transportation projects in the region. According to the Orange County Register, the project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion for drivers in the area.
The completion of the 5 Freeway expansion marks a significant milestone in enhancing transportation infrastructure in South Orange County. As residents and visitors begin to experience the benefits of the new lanes, the project is poised to support the region’s growth and development.
