A press conference in the Oval Office turned chaotic on Friday (April 18) when a young family member of Dr. Mehmet Oz collapsed during the event. The event marked Dr. Oz’s official appointment to oversee Medicare and Medicaid. With Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. present at the ceremony, Dr. Oz spoke briefly about his plans to reform Medicaid and Medicare.
“Next big thing we want to focus on is modernizing Medicare and Medicaid,” he said. “That’s how Americans will get the care that they want, need and deserve. Need to empower patients and providers, both the doctors and the patients, both have to be equipped with better tools.”
After the swearing-in ceremony, President Donald Trump took questions from the media. While he was addressing reporters about Iran’s nuclear program, chaos broke out in the room as a young member of Dr. Oz’s family fainted.
Footage from the scene showed Dr. Oz rushing to assist the young girl. President Trump, who was mid-speech, briefly paused and observed as Dr. Oz and others attended to the girl.
The press conference was abruptly cut short as officials instructed reporters to leave the room. An official could be heard telling the press, “Out, out, press out,” as they were ushered out of the Oval Office.
The White House later confirmed that the girl was a “minor family member” and assured that she was fine.
“A minor family member fainted during Dr Oz’s swearing in ceremony in the Oval Office. We are happy to say she is OK,” the White House said in a statement.
