Father Arrested by ICE While Dropping Daughter at School

In Azusa, California, immigration agents arrested an undocumented father, Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez, as he was dropping his daughter off at school on Thursday. The arrest, captured on surveillance video, occurred just before 7:45 a.m. Avelica-Gonzalez, 48, has lived in the United States for 25 years. His daughter, Fatima, recorded the incident, capturing her emotional response as her father was taken into custody.

According to WSOC-TV, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained Avelica-Gonzalez due to multiple prior criminal convictions, including a DUI in 2009, and an outstanding order of removal dating back to 2014. His family is working with an attorney to file for a U-visa, which could allow him to remain in the country.

The arrest is part of a broader increase in ICE actions targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records, following an executive order by President Donald Trump prioritizing such deportations. The family expressed their distress over the situation, with Avelica-Gonzalez’s daughter, Jocelyn, telling CNN, “We knew the day was going to come…especially with the election of President Donald Trump.”

Avelica-Gonzalez remains in custody, and his family continues to seek legal avenues to prevent his deportation.
