Residents of an Ontario neighborhood are urging city officials to address a persistent issue of dangerous driving along 6th Street. This problem has led to numerous accidents, including at least one fatal crash. According to neighbors, reckless driving and speeding are common, with drivers often crashing into parked cars, leaving them totaled.
Local resident Teresa Velasquez, who has lived on 6th Street for 30 years, explained that the stretch between Benson and Mountain Avenues is problematic due to navigation systems directing traffic through the area as an alternative to the 10 Freeway. Velasquez noted that drivers frequently exceed the 35 miles-per-hour speed limit, sometimes reaching speeds of 50-60 mph.
Despite efforts to calm traffic by installing small islands on the road, these measures have inadvertently created additional hazards. As resident Guy Scalise described, “It just turns out to be a slalom course for the kids.” Drivers often swerve around these islands, losing control and crashing into parked vehicles.
The community’s frustration has grown following a recent crash just two days ago. Scalise has taken it upon himself to install cameras to assist neighbors with insurance claims. He criticized the city’s response, saying, “They’ll send a motorcycle cop out for like two days for a couple of hours in the middle of the afternoon, not morning rush hour, not evening rush hour, not late at night when the kids are going really fast.”
Despite numerous calls to city hall, Velasquez and other residents feel that more decisive action is needed. “Why don’t they care about us? Why don’t they care about the people having accidents?” Velasquez questioned. City officials have stated they are investigating the issue.
