Newsom Sends ‘Burner’ Phones to California Tech CEOs

Governor Gavin Newsom of California has initiated an unusual outreach effort by sending prepaid cell phones, often referred to as ‘burners,’ to about 100 leaders of state-headquartered companies. These phones, programmed with Newsom’s personal number, were accompanied by notes encouraging the recipients to contact him directly if needed.

The initiative, which was Newsom’s idea, aims to strengthen ties with the business community and ensure California remains competitive. Newsom is known for his direct communication style, often texting with business leaders, but this move underscores his commitment to maintaining a close relationship with the state’s business elite.

The California Protocol Foundation, which funds gubernatorial expenses, covered the cost of the phones, ensuring that taxpayers are not financially responsible. The foundation receives contributions from businesses and nonprofits, and it also used leftover funds from Newsom’s inauguration account.

The gesture has already led to some “valuable interactions,” according to a representative. Newsom’s approach highlights his alignment with business interests and his role as a key figure when Silicon Valley seeks support or intervention.
