Goats to Help Clear Brush in Palos Verdes Estates

In a unique effort to prevent brush fires, approximately 900 goats will be deployed to clear vegetation in Palos Verdes Estates, California. Los Angeles County officials announced on Thursday that the goats will graze on weeds and other vegetation across 37 acres of parklands. The targeted areas include Valmonte Canyon, the Palos Verdes stables, Lunada Canyon, the hillside between Via Boronado and Espinosa Circle, and the hillside below Via Pinzon and Mirlo Gate House.

The initiative, funded by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office, aims to reduce fire risks in these high-priority zones. According to NBC Los Angeles, 400 goats began their work in Valmonte Canyon on Thursday, with the task expected to take about a week and a half. Additional goats will be introduced to other locations next week, with the entire project slated for completion by the end of March.

The city of Palos Verdes Estates contracted Fire Grazers, Inc., a company experienced in similar projects on the peninsula, to manage the goats. The cost of the $67,000 contract will be reimbursed by Supervisor Hahn’s office. Mayor Victoria Lozzi expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the importance of the project in protecting residents and their properties from fire risks.

Supervisor Hahn highlighted the natural beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, acknowledging the increased wildfire risk it poses. “If you see the goats this month in Palos Verdes Estates, know that they are hard at work making this community safer,” Hahn stated.
