LOS ANGELES (CNS) – What organizers are billing as the West Coast’s largest free Independence Day celebration will take place Thursday at Gloria Molina Grand Park and include 800 drones flying above The Music Center instead of a fireworks show.
The 12-minute drone show will begin at 9 p.m. and depict aerial images that uniquely represent Los Angeles, orchestrated to a playlist curated by DJ and music producer Captain Planet.
The 800 drones are an increase of 300 over last year’s inaugural Independence Day drone show at The Music Center.
The nearly 6-hour block party will begin at 4 p.m. and also include two stages, a 75-foot “Super Slide” and a 65-foot-tall Ferris wheel.
Rachel S. Moore, the president and CEO of The Music Center, said the block party “will be a celebration of community and resilience shared among Angelenos seeking to build connections and mutual support.”
The party will be spread across the six city blocks that comprise Gloria Molina Grand Park and its surrounding streets
Moore described the party as “geared for the whole family — and their four-legged friends on leashes.”
The Mexican cumbia band Grupo Soñador will be the headliner on the party’s Backyard Stage on the park’s event lawn across the street from City Hall, between Broadway and Spring Street.
The other artists set to perform on the stage include the Los Angeles- based six-piece band, Healing Gems, known for its genre-bending blend of exotica, international jazz and cinematic sounds; the dance company, KimBambula Cuban Dance & Music Ensemble; and the East Los Angeles-based grunge-and-cumbia band Tropa Mágica.
Singer/songwriter Banga Brownin will host and DJ the opening set at the Front Yard Stage on the park’s performance lawn between Grand Avenue and Hill Street. The DJs Jeremy Sole, Francesca Harding and Nu-Mark will follow.
Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic. Food and snacks can be purchased from food trucks including tacos, barbecue, hamburgers, vegan food and desserts. Alcohol is not permitted in the park and will not be sold at the event.
There will be three specially marked entrances — Grand Avenue and 1st Street; Hill and Temple streets; and Hill and 2nd streets.
Parking for $10 will be available at The Music Center garage and Walt Disney Concert Hall garage. Because of the large number of people expected, taking public transportation is highly encouraged.
Fireworks shows include the 20-minute display at Councilman Bob Blumenfield’s July 4th Extravaganza at Warner Center Park. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and also include a concert by Angela O’Neill & The Outrageous8 with the Paul Litteral Band.
Food will be available from more than 15 food trucks.
Another 20-minute fireworks show will be held in Marina del Rey. It will begin at 9 p.m., synchronized to music played over loudspeakers at Burton Chace Park and Fisherman’s Village.
Fireworks will follow the Major League Soccer game at the Rose Bowl between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles Football Club; the Los Angeles Dodgers-Arizona Diamondbacks game at Dodger Stadium; the Harry Connick Jr. concert at the Hollywood Bowl; and the performances by Billy Joel tribute performer Billy Nation and Fleetwood Mac tribute band Mirage at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank.
Fireworks shows are also scheduled at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Universal Studios Hollywood.
