Big Bear’s Jackie & Shadow Welcome Third Eaglet

In Big Bear, California, a third bald eagle chick has hatched, joining its two siblings who emerged earlier this week. .

The eaglets’ parents, Jackie and Shadow, have been caring for the two older chicks, feeding them fish and keeping them warm despite snowy conditions. The nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates a live webcam of the nest, reported the first signs of hatching at 10:21 a.m. on Thursday (March 6).

The two older eaglets are already showing signs of sibling rivalry, pecking at each other during feedings, but this is considered normal behavior. The third eaglet will have to compete for food, but once the older siblings are full, it will have its turn to be fed.

This marks a significant moment for Jackie and Shadow, as they have not had three chicks hatch simultaneously since the Friends of Big Bear Valley began observing them in 2015. The eaglets’ names will be decided through a public naming contest. The sex of the eaglets will be determined in several weeks.

The live feed of the nest has attracted thousands of viewers, eager to witness the rare occurrence of three eaglets in one nest. Sandy Steers of Friends of Big Bear Valley, expressed her excitement, saying, “I can’t even describe how thrilled I am. It just fills my heart that people are so open to connecting with nature and appreciating it.”

Despite the snowy weather, Jackie and Shadow are expected to keep their chicks warm and safe, using their insulated and waterproof bodies to protect them from the elements.
