Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, has initiated a recall of approximately 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage-on-a-stick products across the United States. This recall follows reports of wood pieces being found embedded in the batter, leading to injuries for at least five consumers.
The recall affects “State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” products, which were produced between March 17 and September 26 at a facility in Haltom City, Texas. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the issue was discovered after multiple consumer complaints. Hillshire Brands determined that wooden sticks inadvertently entered the production process before the batter was applied.
The affected products were distributed nationwide, including sales to grocery stores, schools, and Department of Defense facilities. Consumers are advised to check for establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894” on packaging to identify the recalled items. Those in possession of these products should dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
Tyson Foods stated that the recall was initiated “out of an abundance of caution” and emphasized that no other products from the State Fair or Jimmy Dean brands are affected. The company assured that the issue is isolated to this specific facility.
The USDA has expressed concern that some recalled products may still be in consumer and institutional freezers. Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and follow recall instructions to ensure safety.
