A manhunt has been launched for “multiple shooters” in relation to a shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, that resulted in four deaths and 18 injuries late Saturday (September 21) night, the Birmingham Police Department announced via NBC News.
At least four of the wounded victims suffered “life-threatening injuries” during the shooting “fired upon a large group of people” in one of the city’s “most popular entertainment districts,” Birmingham Police Department Officer Truman Fitzgerald confirmed during a news conference Sunday (September 22) morning. Officers “observed two adult males and one adult female who was unresponsive on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound” when they arrived at the scene just after 11:00 p.m.
The initial three victims were pronounced “dead at the scene” by responding medics and the fourth was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.
“We believe that multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people,” Fitzgerald said via NBC News. “Our detectives are working to confirm whether the shooters walked up on the victims or drove by in a vehicle, and that’s why we need the public’s help.”
“There’s no one in custody,” he added. “Rest assured, we are going to do everything we possibly can to make sure that we uncover, identify and hunt down who was ever responsible for preying on our people.”
