Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian President Vladimir Putin is showing “no sign” that he plans to end the ongoing war between the two countries ahead of the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska scheduled for Friday (August 15).
“We must learn from the experience of Ukraine, our partners, to prevent deception by Russia,” Zelenskyy said in a statement posted to social media via ABC News. “There is no sign now that the Russians are preparing to end the war,” he added. “Our coordinated efforts and joint steps — of Ukraine, the United States, Europe, all countries that want peace — can definitely force Russia to make peace.”
President Donald Trump will participate in “a listening exercise” with Putin in Anchorage on Friday, which will give Trump “the best indication of how to end this war and where this is headed,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday (August 12).
“I think this is a listening exercise for the president,” she said. “Only one party that’s involved in this war is going to be present. And so this is for the president to go and to get, again, a more firm and better understanding of how we can hopefully bring this war to an end.”
Additional details are still being worked out between the two sides, however, Leavitt said it was “part of the plan” for Trump to meet with Putin in-person. Zelenskyy, who isn’t expected to attend the summit, said his government was “preparing certain steps to further mobilize our partners” in a post shared on his Telegram account.
