Young Boy Killed After Bounce House Goes Airborne At Baseball Game

A five-year-old boy was killed, and another was injured when a gust of wind picked up a bounce house and tossed it into the air during a Maryland Blue Crabs game on Friday (August 2).

The bounce house was lifted about 20 feet into the air, causing the children inside to fall out before crashing down in the right field.

Paramedics, trainers from the baseball teams, and several fans rushed over to help the children. Two children were taken to the hospital. Five-year-old Declan Hicks was pronounced dead, while the other child remains remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Blue Crabs canceled the remainder of the game and the game on Saturday.

“Our entire organization shares our condolences with the family mourning the loss of a child and concern for the child who was injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all,” Courtney Knichel, General Manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, said in a statement.

The team said it would provide counseling to families, players, and fans who were at the game.

Investigators are trying to determine if the bounce house was properly secured before the accident. However, according to WRC, witnesses said the bounce house appeared to be properly staked into the ground.
