A million-dollar home on Nantucket is being offered for free, but there’s a catch. The new owner must relocate the 1,736-square-foot colonial from 140 Surfside Road within 180 days. This offer is part of the island’s Demolition Delay Bylaw program, which encourages relocating older homes instead of demolishing them.
The house, located away from erosion-prone areas, is being given away by Dean Lampe, who purchased it for $3 million in December 2025. The program aims to reduce landfill waste and preserve historical structures. Interested parties must submit a letter of intention to the town’s building commissioner and the current owner.
Moving a house on Nantucket can cost between $150,000 and $500,000, depending on various factors like road width and utility lines. Despite the cost, it’s often cheaper than building a new home on the island, where the median house price is $4.4 million.
The practice of house moving is common on Nantucket, with over 75 homes relocated since 2020. The tradition dates back to the 1600s and was officially codified in 1997. The island’s limited land and high property values make this an attractive option for those looking to own a home in the area.
