INGLEWOOD (CNS) – Two women believed to be employees at an aeronautics and aviation training school are in critical condition Saturday after a shooting in Inglewood by a former school employee.
The shooting occurred at 3:45 p.m. Friday inside an office on the campus of the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in the 8900 block of Aviation Boulevard, between Arbor Vitae Street and Hillcrest Boulevard, authorities said.
Both victims were taken to a hospital in critical condition, CBS2 reported.
KTLA5 reported the suspect — a former employee of the college — barricaded inside a building before he fled the campus. He was allegedly wearing an outfit that resembled a security uniform, according to Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, the station reported.
“It is our understanding that the suspect was a former employee of the college, Butts told CBS2.
The suspect was arrested in Koreatown, ABC7 reported. CBS2 said the suspect’s family contacted authorities and told them suspect had shot the women.
A man matching the description of the alleged shooter was handcuffed and detained. Police wouldn’t confirm his identity but did say the shooting suspect is in custody, according to ABC7.
Inglewood’s mayor described the shooting as an act of “workplace violence.”
Chris Becker, the president and administrator of the aviation campus, said safety is one of the school’s top priorities.
“It’s a peaceful campus. It’s a nice community of students and teachers and staff,” Becker told reporters.
Butts confirmed that a 9mm shell casing was found at the scene and noted that DNA or fingerprint evidence may be present on it.
The suspect’s name was not released and it was unclear what motivated the shooting.
