Woman Killed Following Shark Attack In US Virgin Islands

A tragic shark attack claimed the life of 56-year-old Arlene Lillis from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, while she was snorkeling at Dorsch Beach in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands on Thursday (January 8). The Virgin Islands Police Department received a call at approximately 4:28 p.m. AST, reporting a woman in distress, later identified as Lillis, who had been bitten by a shark.

First responders, including marine units and Fire and Emergency Medical Services, quickly arrived at the scene. Lillis lost her arm during the attack and succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to the hospital.

Witnesses reported that the incident occurred within a designated swimming area. Christopher Carroll, a nurse and former lifeguard, was among the bystanders who rushed to assist Lillis. Carroll told Dive Magazine, “When I got to her, I saw a large amount of blood in the water. And then I realized that it was some kind of shark attack.” Carroll, along with other beachgoers, helped tow Lillis back to shore and provided aid until emergency responders arrived.

The attack has shocked the local community and prompted condolences from officials. U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan Jr. expressed his sympathies, stating, “Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of the victim, and with everyone who witnessed this tragedy.” Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach also thanked those who attempted to help Lillis.

The species of shark involved in the attack has not been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. The Global Shark Attack File notes that shark attacks in the U.S. Virgin Islands are extremely rare, with only five incidents reported since 1948.
