Woman Gives Birth After Discovering Pregnancy Just Days Before

A Bakersfield family experienced an unexpected joy a woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy just days after discovering she was pregnant.

The baby, named Ryu, was developing outside her uterus in a rare abdominal ectopic pregnancy, hidden behind a large ovarian tumor. This extraordinary event, described as a “medical miracle” by doctors at Cedars-Sinai, unfolded when Suze Lopez, 41, was preparing for surgery to remove a 22-pound ovarian cyst.

According to Cedars-Sinai, Lopez’s pregnancy went unnoticed due to the tumor’s size and her history of irregular periods. Three days after learning about the pregnancy, Lopez experienced abdominal pain and was rushed to Cedars-Sinai. There, doctors discovered the baby growing near her liver, a situation that is almost unheard of.

The delivery involved a team of about 30 medical experts, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, gynecological oncologists, and anesthesiologists. Dr. John Ozimek, the medical director of Labor and Delivery, led the team that safely delivered Ryu and removed the massive cyst. Despite the high-risk nature of the pregnancy, both mother and baby are doing well. Ryu, born weighing eight pounds, quickly reached important health benchmarks, defying the odds typically associated with such pregnancies.

Lopez, a nurse herself, expressed immense gratitude for the support she received, particularly from nurse Carmen Chavez, whom she referred to as her “guardian angel.” Lopez’s husband, Andrew, shared their joy, stating, “Ryu and Suze are my miracles.” The family believes Ryu is the answer to years of praying for a second child, choosing the middle name “Jesse,” meaning “gift from God,” to reflect their gratitude.
