A 69-year-old woman was killed by a group of armed robbers outside of Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California, on Tuesday (July 2). The Newport Beach Police Department said that the woman and her husband were walking near a Barnes & Noble around 3:30 p.m. when they were approached by two men who attempted to rob them.
A struggle ensued, and one of the suspects fled while firing several shots at the woman and her husband. The woman was then dragged into the parking lot, where she was struck by a car. The other suspect then got into the car and fled the scene.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The men led police on a wild high-speed chase, with speeds topping 110 mph. Eventually, the two men abandoned their vehicle and tried to escape on foot. Officers managed to locate both men and took them into custody. They also arrested a third person in connection with the fatal attack.
Officials have not identified the alleged attackers or the victims.
Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill had harsh words for the suspects.
“You know, frankly, to hell with these guys,” O’Neill told KTLA. “They knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to come into our city to commit a crime, and a woman is dead because of it.”
