Wolf Return’s To L.A. County, First in Over a Century

SANTA CLARITA (CNS) – A gray wolf that had been roaming the desert area of Kern County may be looking for love Monday in Los Angeles County, after crossing the county line marking the first time in about 100 years that one of the creatures has been spotted this far south.

The black-coated 3-year-old female arrived Saturday morning around 6 a.m. in the mountains north of Santa Clarita, state wildlife officials told the Los Angeles Times.

The wolf, known as BEY03F, has had a GPS collar since May.

She was tagged while running with what’s known as the Yowlumni Pack in Tulare County.

BEY03F split from that pack a week ago and is now considered a lone wolf who is looking for a partner and suitable habitat.

Before a wolf returned briefly to northern California from Oregon in 2011, the animals had been gone from the Golden State since the last one was shot in 1924.

There are now at least 60 in the state, according to The Times.
