Will Teachers Embrace New ‘Learning Studio’ Classrooms?

Social studies teacher Gregg Solkovits recalls his days at Monroe High in the San Fernando Valley, where he moved from classroom to classroom without a space of his own due to overcrowding. Now, this concept is being reimagined as an instructional innovation in the form of “learning studios.”

The new Compton High School, opening this fall, exemplifies this shift. Teachers will not have their own classrooms but will conduct classes in various spaces based on topic and availability. These high-tech “learning studios” resemble college lecture halls, featuring movable furniture and advanced technology to support flexible learning environments. Alenoush Aghajanians, the design leader for the DLR Group architecture firm, emphasized the adaptability of these spaces, which include projection screens and whiteboards for interactive learning.

Principal Larry Natividad believes this setup will prepare students for college environments. Teachers will have access to compact “collaboration rooms” equipped with desks and computers when not leading classes.

According to the Los Angeles Times, technology facilitates this concept, as students increasingly complete work online. However, concerns remain about the feasibility for teachers with mobility issues and the impact on creating a personalized classroom environment. Kristen Luevanos, president of the Compton teachers union, expressed the need for adequate teacher training and input before implementation.

While some educators are skeptical, others see potential in the innovation. Compton High is new and attractive to families, and there is hope that the concept will benefit students. Luevanos noted, “Innovation is great and this concept is really interesting — and personally I kind of like it — but there are still a lot of questions to be answered.”
