Wild Video Shows Serbian Parliament Members Throwing Smoke Bombs

Chaos erupted in Serbia’s parliament on Tuesday (March 4) as opposition lawmakers threw smoke bombs and flares during a heated session in Belgrade. The session was initially scheduled to vote on increasing funding for university education. However, opposition parties argued that the session was illegal and demanded the confirmation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic‘s resignation before proceeding with any votes.

The turmoil began about an hour into the session, with opposition lawmakers blowing whistles and displaying banners reading “Serbia has risen so the regime would fall!”

Video footage showed lawmakers clashing and throwing smoke bombs, flares, eggs, and water bottles.

The incident resulted in injuries to at least three lawmakers, including Jasmina Obradovic, who was hospitalized. The Washington Post reported that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visited Obradovic in the hospital, expressing support for her recovery.

The chaos reflects ongoing political tensions in Serbia, where anti-corruption protests have been frequent since the collapse of a railway canopy in November 2024, which killed 15 people. Critics blame the incident on government corruption and negligence. Opposition parties have been pushing for a transitional government to ensure free and fair elections, a demand the ruling party has rejected.

Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic condemned the opposition’s actions, calling them “a disgrace to Serbia.” Meanwhile, opposition leaders, like Radomir Lazovic, emphasized their willingness to support the education funding bill but insisted on addressing the government’s fall first.

The session highlighted the deep political crisis in Serbia, with ongoing protests demanding accountability and reform from the ruling populist government.
