A wild black bear recently made an unexpected visit to the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, where it was spotted interacting with the resident bears. According to the zoo’s Facebook post, the bear was discovered by staff during a routine inspection of the Redwood Sky Walk, a tour path that overlooks the bear habitats. The wild bear, described as “very polite,” leaned on a gate to observe the three zoo bears—Tule, Ishŭng, and Kunabulilh—through their habitat fencing.
The Eureka Police Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were called to the scene around 9:30 a.m. to assist in guiding the bear back to the wild. Despite the surprise visit, the bear did not display any aggressive behavior and remained on the boardwalk path without attempting to climb over the railings or enter the enclosures. The zoo staff expressed humor about the situation, noting that while they welcome wildlife, this was not what they had in mind.
The bear is believed to have come from the adjacent 60-acre Sequoia Park, but how it managed to enter the zoo remains a mystery, as the perimeter fencing was found intact and secure. The zoo continues to monitor the area to prevent future occurrences.
