Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi, 53, was arrested in Mexicali, Mexico, on Saturday (March 22) as the prime suspect in the murder of her wife, Cal Fire Captain Rebecca Marodi. Rebecca Marodi, 49, was found stabbed to death in their Ramona, California home on February 17. Authorities had named Olejniczak Marodi as the prime suspect three weeks ago.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, Olejniczak Marodi was apprehended at a hotel in Mexicali and transferred to U.S. Marshals at the border. She will be booked into custody in San Diego on suspicion of murder. The investigation into Rebecca Marodi’s death is ongoing.
Rebecca Marodi was a decorated fire captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. She was involved in battling the Eaton fire in January near Los Angeles. The couple had been married for just over two years. The Los Angeles Times reports that Rebecca Marodi had informed her wife of her intention to end their marriage about a week before her death.
Olejniczak Marodi has a criminal history, having previously served nearly a decade in prison for the voluntary manslaughter of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak, in 2000. Surveillance footage from the couple’s home captured the moments leading up to Rebecca Marodi’s death. The video shows Olejniczak Marodi arguing with and physically assaulting her wife before leaving the scene. She was later seen packing items into a silver SUV and crossing the border into Mexico.
AOL reports that Rebecca Marodi was a 32-year veteran of the fire service, starting as a volunteer in Moreno Valley in 1993 and eventually becoming a captain in 2022. The sheriff’s department continues to investigate the circumstances and motivation behind her death.
