Concern is mounting among animal activists over the whereabouts of Billy and Tina, the Los Angeles Zoo’s two remaining Asian elephants. The elephants appear to have been transferred in the middle of the night amid ongoing controversy and legal battles over their planned relocation to the Tulsa Zoo. The move has sparked outrage among animal rights advocates who argue that the elephants should be retired to a sanctuary instead.
The Los Angeles Zoo announced last month that Billy, 40, and Tina, 59, would be moved to the Tulsa Zoo, a decision that has frustrated many. Critics, including Social Compassion in Legislation, have long criticized the zoo’s elephant program due to its small enclosure size and the health issues faced by its inhabitants. The group shared photos of the empty enclosure on Instagram, expressing their uncertainty about the elephants’ current location.
Judie Mancuso, founder and president of Social Compassion in Legislation, expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s just really too bad and there’s a lot of broken hearts right now.” Melissa Lerner, part of the legal team trying to block the transfer, added, “It was done secretly and surreptitiously.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that L.A. City Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, a longtime advocate for the elephants, is also frustrated by the situation. He had filed a City Council motion to pause the relocation until the possibility of sending the elephants to a sanctuary could be reviewed. Despite this, the transfer appears to be proceeding, leading Blumenfield to question the decision-making process.
L.A. Zoo Director Denise Verret stated that the decision to move the elephants was made in their best interest and followed recommendations from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. However, the lack of transparency and the speed of the transfer have raised concerns about the motives behind the move.
As of now, representatives from the L.A. Zoo, the Tulsa Zoo, and Mayor Karen Bass’ office have not responded to requests for comment. The situation remains uncertain, with activists continuing to push for the elephants’ relocation to a sanctuary.
