California’s Daylighting Law, which took effect in January 2025, is now being strictly enforced across Southern California.
The law prohibits parking within 20 feet of the approach side of any crosswalk, or within 15 feet if there is a curb extension, to improve visibility and safety for pedestrians and motorists. Violators will face a $63 fine.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has ended the grace period and is actively issuing tickets for violations. The law aims to reduce pedestrian accidents, as nearly 36% of pedestrian deaths occur at intersections. According to LAist, parking legally helps improve visibility and safety for everyone.
The enforcement is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety. In Long Beach, 65% of traffic deaths and serious injuries involve pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists. Local officials urge drivers to measure their distance from crosswalks when parking to avoid fines. Fox LA reports that the LASD encourages motorists to familiarize themselves with these parking regulations to avoid penalties.
For oversized vehicles, LA County’s nonconforming vehicle ordinance requires parking in designated areas. Violations could result in towing, with owners responsible for removal and storage costs. The LASD emphasizes that the purpose of these laws is to enhance public safety by improving visibility at intersections.
