The Westminster City Council voted 4-1 on Wednesday to partially rename a street in honor of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was assassinated in September. The decision, made despite significant community opposition, will see “Charlie Kirk Way” added in smaller font beneath “All American Way” on street signs between Westminster Boulevard and 13th Street. The change will not affect the official street name, and the cost for new signage is estimated at $3,000.
Councilmember Amy Phan West criticized the small font size for Kirk’s name, stating, “If you do something to honor someone, honor them correctly and properly.” Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen, who proposed the change, emphasized that the intention is to recognize individuals who have inspired civic participation, not to create division. “Charlie Kirk’s message inspired countless young Americans to think critically, serve their communities, and appreciate the freedoms we enjoy,” he said.
Councilmember Carlos Manzo, the lone dissenting vote, argued that Kirk had no ties to Westminster and that the council should avoid national political issues. Many residents echoed this sentiment, suggesting that local figures with significant contributions to the community, such as the Mendez family, should be honored instead.
In addition to the street renaming, the council approved a motion to designate October 14 as Charlie Kirk Day by a 3-2 vote. The decision has sparked controversy and is expected to face legal challenges, with critics questioning the relevance of honoring Kirk in Westminster.
