The Trump administration has revoked the visas of more than three dozen students and alumni from various California universities. This action is part of a broader visa crackdown, reportedly targeting international students involved in political activism, particularly those supporting pro-Palestinian causes. The affected institutions include Stanford University and several campuses within the University of California (UC) system.
Stanford University confirmed that the visas of four students and two recent graduates were revoked. The university learned of these revocations during a routine check of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database. Stanford has offered external legal assistance to those affected.
The University of California system reported that the visas of multiple students across its campuses have been nullified. At UC Berkeley, six individuals, including two undergraduates, two graduate students, and two alumni, were affected. UC San Diego saw five student visas revoked, while UC Davis reported the termination of visas for seven students and five recent graduates.
UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk confirmed that the visas of six current students and six recent graduates were revoked. In a message to the campus community, Frenk expressed concern over the uncertainty and anxiety these actions have caused.
The federal government has not provided specific reasons for these terminations, but many speculate they are linked to minor legal infractions or political activities. Some terminations may be due to past interactions with law enforcement, ranging from minor offenses to more serious charges.
