An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi was escorted by Italian fighter jets to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport on Sunday (February 23) due to a bomb threat that was later deemed non-credible. The flight, AA292, was diverted midair after the crew reported a security issue, prompting the airline to request a landing in Rome.
The flight was initially over the Caspian Sea when the alert was received. Italian Air Force Eurofighter jets escorted the Boeing 787 to ensure its safe arrival in Rome at around 5:30 p.m. local time.
The Aeronautica Militare confirmed the escort, sharing images and videos of the operation on social media.
Upon landing, passengers underwent additional security screenings. After the inspection, the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey to New Delhi. However, the passengers had to stay in Rome overnight to allow the crew time to rest.
American Airlines stated it was determined that the threat was “non-credible,” noting that safety and security are top priorities, and apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers.
