Unruly Teens Force Early Shutdown Of Charity Carnival Two Nights In A Row

Teens forced the early closure of the annual Maple Shade Tigers Youth Football Carnival in Maple Shade, New Jersey, after overwhelming the event and sparking several fights on Wednesday, (May 1), according to township officials. The carnival, a beloved community tradition held at JFK Memorial Field to raise funds for the nonprofit football program, was shut down mid-evening as police and organizers struggled to restore order.

Large crowds of unsupervised juveniles descended on the carnival, resulting in disturbances that included fighting and defiance toward officers. Lt. Daniel O’Brien of the Maple Shade Police Department said, “They were cursing at police officers. They were clearly trying to provoke physical confrontations with cops,” as reported by the New York Post. Police directed those involved to leave, but faced resistance from teens as they attempted to clear the grounds. Witnesses described “herds of kids” being escorted out by officers, with some teens seen fighting and running through nearby streets.

Fears over possible weapons circulated online, but police confirmed that no weapons were found and no serious injuries were reported. Several teens now face charges, though authorities have not specified the alleged crimes. Police are reviewing social media videos to identify additional suspects and are considering whether to pursue penalties against parents—a move made possible by recent New Jersey legislation, according to WPVI.

Due to the disturbances, carnival organizers canceled the event’s final night on Thursday, (May 2), resulting in significant financial losses for the youth football program. “As a nonprofit, everything always goes back into the program…new equipment, uniforms, helmets,” said Thomas Oshinsky, president of the Maple Shade Tigers, in a statement to the Courier-Post.

Maple Shade officials said, “The safety of community must remain our top priority,” while expressing disappointment over the loss of a valued tradition and the impact on families and volunteers.

In response to the Maple Shade incident, other local carnivals, including the upcoming St. Mary of the Lakes Carnival in Medford, have announced stricter security, including enclosed perimeters, limited entrances, bag checks, and bans on face coverings and hoodies.
