Underwater Bomb Found At Alabama Dam Supplying City’s Water

An explosive device was discovered underwater at the base of the Converse Reservoir dam in Mobile County, Alabama, on Wednesday (May 13). The dam supplies drinking water to the city of Mobile and surrounding areas. Divers conducting routine maintenance found the “grenade-type” improvised explosive device (IED), prompting a swift emergency response from multiple agencies, including the FBI Bomb Squad.

The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) reported that the device was safely detonated without any harm to the dam or the water supply. MAWSS Director Bud McCrory emphasized the importance of maintaining the safety of the drinking water, stating, “This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage.”

The Converse Reservoir, also known as Big Creek Lake, is a 3,600-acre man-made watershed that provides drinking water to 350,000 people. It is considered critical federal infrastructure, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been notified of the incident. The reservoir is also a popular spot for recreational activities such as fishing and boating.

In response to the discovery, MAWSS plans to work with state and federal law enforcement to enhance security at the dam. The agencies involved in the response included the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, FBI Bomb Squad, Mobile Police Department Explosive Ordinance Detail, ALEA Bomb Squad, and the Daphne Search and Rescue Team.

Local officials expressed their gratitude for the successful removal of the device. Republican Senator Katie Britt of Alabama praised the multi-agency response, saying, “Ensuring that our reservoirs remain secure is critical.” Similarly, Alabama Republican Representative Barry Moore acknowledged the quick action taken by local, state, and federal law enforcement.

As of Thursday (May 14), authorities had not released information on potential suspects or how long the IED had been in place. The investigation is ongoing.
