Federal prosecutors have initiated compliance review investigations into the admissions policies at UCLA and UC Irvine to determine if the universities have been using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) criteria in their student selection processes. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division launched the probe following a directive from Attorney General Pamela Bondi, in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 decision prohibiting the use of DEI as a basis for college admissions.
Bondi announced the investigations on Thursday, emphasizing her commitment, alongside President Donald Trump, to ending what she describes as illegal discrimination and restoring merit-based opportunities across the nation. “Every student in America deserves to be judged solely based on their hard work, intellect, and character, not the color of their skin,” Bondi stated, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.
The investigations are part of a broader initiative by the Department of Justice to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action, which was intended to favor minorities but has now been deemed discriminatory. The DOJ’s actions are not limited to UCLA and UC Irvine; they also include checks at other California institutions such as Stanford University and UC Berkeley, according to UPI.
The University of Southern California, although not under investigation, announced it would replace the term “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” with “Community” to align with federal guidance and avoid controversy. The DOJ’s investigations are expected to continue as they aim to eradicate what they see as illegal DEI practices and protect equality under the law, as noted by Voz.
