UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons will appear before a congressional committee on Tuesday to address allegations of antisemitism on campus. The hearing, led by the House Committee on Education and Workforce, comes amid multiple federal investigations into UC Berkeley and other universities for alleged civil rights violations against Jewish students and faculty. The committee, chaired by Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), aims to examine the role of faculty, funding, and ideology in fostering antisemitism in higher education.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Trump administration has accused several elite universities, including UC Berkeley, of allowing antisemitism to fester, particularly amid pro-Palestinian protests since 2023. The administration has taken actions such as freezing federal funding and scrutinizing foreign students. UC Berkeley, along with other California universities, is part of a task force investigation directed by President Trump to combat campus antisemitism.
In a statement, Rep. Walberg emphasized the need to address underlying factors like foreign funding and antisemitic groups to protect Jewish students and faculty. UC Berkeley has defended its efforts to combat antisemitism, citing increased training and collaborations with Jewish organizations. Dan Mogulof, assistant vice chancellor for executive communications, stated that the campus is committed to combating all forms of hate.
The hearing will also feature testimonies from Georgetown University interim President Robert M. Groves and City University of New York Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. The outcomes of these hearings could impact federal funding and policies at these institutions.
