A tragic incident occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday (August 27) when a tire exploded as it was being removed from a Delta Air Lines plane. The explosion resulted in the death of two people and left another seriously injured. The victims were a Delta employee and a contractor working at the airport’s maintenance area. Another Delta employee was seriously injured in the incident.
The cause of the explosion is not yet clear. The plane had traveled from Las Vegas to Atlanta on Sunday night.
Delta Air Lines expressed its condolences in a statement, saying, “The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3). We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
The airline also thanked first responders and medical teams for their quick action and stated that they are working with local authorities to conduct a full investigation into the incident.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also expressed his condolences and shared his thoughts with those injured, hoping for their swift and full recovery.
“I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees,” he said. “My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their swift and full recovery.”
