SOUTH EL MONTE (CNS) – A pursuit of two motorcyclists observed taking part in a speed contest on the Pomona (60) Freeway in South El Monte ended without arrest after they drove the wrong way on the Long Beach (710) Freeway and were given cover by a group of motorcyclists in Willowbrook.
The pursuit began about 3:40 p.m. Thursday with a call of several motor bikes and dirt bikes westbound on the Pomona Freeway at Rosemead Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers located the group and initiated an enforcement stop about 10 minutes later, but two of the drivers failed to stop, heading westbound on Fourth Street at Indiana Street, the CHP reported.
The pursuit continued on surface streets and freeways until the motorcyclists drove southbound in northbound lanes of the Long Beach Freeway, the CHP said. Units on the ground broke off the pursuit but a CHP airship monitored the motorcyclists for a while before it was no longer able to continue.
Live news video showed the pair stopping at a gas station near East Imperial Highway and Success Avenue in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, where they were joined by more than a dozen motorcyclists and four- wheel riders, some performing wheelies. Some waved at the television cameras above them before that coverage ended.
One was believed to be an adult in his late teens or early 20s wearing a black sweatshirt and the other was believed in his late teens with a black-and-blue sweatshirt.
