Two people died when a Beechcraft BE35 plane crashed into a business park near Centennial Airport in Colorado early Friday morning (September 5). The plane, which took off around 6:25 a.m., burst into flames upon impact, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The crash site was in the parking lot of an industrial office park, and the fire threatened nearby buildings and diesel-powered generators.
South Metro Fire Rescue responded quickly to the scene, initially reported as an explosion. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames before they could cause damage to the generators or the building, as confirmed by South Metro Fire Rescue Public Information Specialist Brian Willie.
Desmond Brown, who works in a neighboring building, described hearing a “loud boom” and seeing a “big ball of flames” after the plane went down.
“So when we heard a loud boom, me and my coworkers came outside, we noticed a big ball of flames across them,” Brown told KCDO. “Over here, we was wondering what it was. We thought it was a generator at first, and then next thing we heard when another coworker came up to and said it was a plane that went down.”
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), is investigating the incident. Deborah Takahara, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, noted that it was lightly raining at the time of the crash but did not believe airport operations were affected.
