A tragic accident occurred near Hibiscus Island off Miami Beach on Monday (July 28) morning when a barge collided with a sailboat carrying five children and a camp counselor. Two children have died from injuries sustained in the collision, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The incident took place around 11:15 a.m. as the sailboat, part of a sailing camp at the Miami Yacht Club, capsized after being struck by the barge. The impact caused the barge to go over the top of the sailboat, as reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which is leading the investigation.
Three children were taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where two later died. A third child remains unresponsive. A fourth child was transported in stable condition, while a fifth child was evaluated and did not require further medical attention.
The Miami Yacht Club confirmed the incident on its Instagram account, stating, “At this time, details are still emerging, and we are actively gathering all available facts.” The club, located on Watson Island, was closed to nonmembers following the accident.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, along with other emergency services, responded quickly, deploying boats, helicopters, and divers to assist in the search and rescue efforts. The identities of the children have not been released, but they were reported to be between the ages of eight and 12.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
