Tuskegee University’s new dress code, set to take effect this fall, has ignited a heated debate online. The Alabama-based historically Black university (HBCU) will ban bonnets, durags, pajamas, and bedroom slippers in classrooms, cafeterias, and other campus locations. Students attending professional events and business meetings will be required to wear business suits. While many alumni support the move, others argue it resembles cultural policing, especially given the historical scrutiny of Black hair in schools and workplaces. Dr. Brown emphasized that the goal is to provide students with a “solid foundation for the workforce they will enter once they leave Tuskegee” (source).
