Trump’s Approval Rating Surges

President Donald Trump‘s approval rating surged in the latest InsiderAdvantage poll released on Tuesday (May 20).

Trump currently has a 55% approval and 44% disapproval rating, with 1% undecided and a 3.09% margin of error for the poll among 1,000 likely voters conducted between May 17 and May 19.

“These results are not a surprise,” said InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery. “Other pollsters who accurately polled election cycles where President Trump’s name appeared on the ballot have been showing his approval ratings moving into the fifty-percent plus range. Our last survey (conducted jointly with Trafalgar) was one of the first to show that Trump enjoyed a positive rating. But it also showed an unusually high percent of undecided respondents. As I noted at that time, a large undecided number means that opinion is shifting but has not consolidated.

“Since then those undecideds have moved heavily towards approval of President Trump’s job performance. Trump enjoys a positive rating from all age groups other than seniors. His support among other demographics are similar or above the level of supports seen in our final battleground poll of battleground states in 2024.

“Additionally, InsiderAdvantage asked specific and separate questions for State Shield related to U.S. security and potential threats from foreign entities to the United States. The poll revealed that the vast majority of voters are concerned about foreign powers and specifically China. Respondents were concerned about an array of issues with the most significant issue that of potential manipulation of the U.S. supply chain and investments made in the United States. Respondents said they expect candidates in the 2026 cycle to ‘take a tough stand’ on China and their leadership.”

Last week, Trump’s approval rating rose by 2% from 42% on April 21 to 44% in the Reuters/Ipsos poll released last Tuesday (May 13). The poll also showed that his net approval rating increased from -8 on April 21 to -1 on May 13, with the trend being addressed by CNN data guru Harry Enten during a live broadcast this week.

“Time for a reality check… I think some folks thought Trump’s approval rating would keep falling, but it’s rising. Ipsos has his net approval going from -8 pts to -1 pt with voters. Aggregate has him up higher than late April too & much higher than at this point in term 1,” Enten wrote on his X account, along with a clip of his analysis.
